Complete Visa Guidance for International Students

Everything Indian students need to know about student visa applications — country by country

The student visa is the final gate between an Indian student and their global education. After months of preparation, application, and waiting — the visa process is where everything either comes together or falls apart. At Nomad Scholar in Indore, we have guided hundreds of students through student visa applications for Canada, Australia, the UK, Germany, and Ireland. Visa rejections are preventable — and with the right preparation, they are rare.

This guide gives you a comprehensive, country-by-country breakdown of what is required, what to watch out for, and how to approach the process with confidence.

Canada Student Visa (Study Permit)

Canada’s student visa is called a Study Permit. To apply, you need a valid offer letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), proof of financial support (typically CAD 10,000 for the first year plus tuition fees), a valid passport, a Statement of Purpose explaining why you want to study in Canada, English proficiency scores, and academic transcripts.

Since January 2024, Canada has introduced the Student Direct Stream (SDS) for Indian students — a faster processing route that requires an upfront GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) deposit of CAD 20,635, IELTS score of 6.0 or above, and a pre-arrival medical examination. SDS applications are processed in approximately 20 days.

Common reasons for Canada visa rejection include insufficient financial proof, incomplete documentation, a weak SOP that does not clearly explain ties to India and intention to return, and police clearance issues. Our counsellors review every document in a student’s visa application before submission.

Australia Student Visa (Subclass 500)

Australia’s Student Visa (Subclass 500) requires a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from your university, OSHC health insurance, English proficiency scores, a Genuine Student (GS) statement (replacing the old GTE requirement from 2023), financial proof of AUD 24,505 for the first year plus tuition, and academic and character documents.

The Genuine Student statement requires you to explain your study intentions, your reasons for choosing Australia, and how the qualification fits your career goals. This statement is treated seriously — vague or inconsistent answers are a common cause of delays or refusals.

Australia has a biometrics requirement for Indian applicants. Processing time is typically four to eight weeks, though it can extend depending on the time of year. Applications submitted during peak periods (January–March and June–August) take longer.

United Kingdom Student Visa

To apply for a UK Student Visa, you need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your university, proof of English proficiency, financial proof of at least GBP 1,334 per month for up to nine months (or the amount your university specifies), a valid passport, and academic documents.

The UK Student Visa is processed through the online portal, with a biometric appointment required at a Visa Application Centre in India. Decisions typically arrive within three weeks for straightforward applications. Priority and super priority services are available for faster decisions, at an additional fee.

A significant concern with UK student visas is the financial requirement — banks statements must show the required balance for a consecutive 28-day period ending within 31 days of application submission. Many students fail this requirement because they are not aware of this specific rule.

Germany Student Visa

Germany’s student visa process is one of the more document-intensive among popular destinations. You need a university admission letter, APS certificate verifying your Indian academic credentials, a blocked account showing EUR 11,208 (one year of living expenses), health insurance, valid passport, and language proficiency scores (IELTS for English-taught programmes; TestDaF or DSH for German-taught ones).

Germany student visa applications for Indians are submitted at the German Embassy in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, or Kolkata. Processing time is typically six to twelve weeks, which means students must begin the process well in advance of their programme start date.

Ireland Student Visa

Ireland requires an offer letter from an Irish university, financial proof (typically EUR 7,000 in bank statements), English proficiency scores, a completed visa application form, and medical insurance. The application is submitted online with documents uploaded digitally — making it one of the more streamlined visa processes.

Processing typically takes two to eight weeks. Ireland does not have biometrics requirements for Indian applicants, which simplifies the process considerably.

Common Reasons for Visa Rejection Across All Countries

Across all destinations, the most common reasons for student visa rejection are: insufficient or incorrectly presented financial proof, a weak or inconsistent Statement of Purpose, unexplained gaps in academic history, previous visa refusals not properly disclosed, police clearance issues, and documentation that does not match information provided in forms.

At Nomad Scholar in Indore, we review every document in a student’s visa application before submission. We mock-interview students preparing for visa appointments. We have never had a student refused for a preventable reason. That track record is something we are deeply proud of and committed to maintaining.
