✦ Overview

What is the GMAT?

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is the world's most widely used business school admissions test, accepted by 7,700+ programmes at 2,400+ universities in 110+ countries.

Developed and administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the GMAT Focus Edition (launched 2023) evaluates your Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights abilities — the core skills needed to succeed in business school and management careers.

For Indian students aiming to join top MBA programmes at schools like Harvard, Wharton, INSEAD, London Business School, or ISB Hyderabad, a strong GMAT score is one of the most critical components of your application. Most top-10 global MBA programmes have average GMAT scores of 700–730, while ISB and IIM Ahmedabad PGP typically see averages of 710–720.

The GMAT Focus Edition (2023) is significantly shorter and more flexible than its predecessor — running just 2 hours 15 minutes with a new scoring scale of 205–805. You can now choose the order of your sections and review and change answers within each section.

💡 GMAT vs GRE — Which should you take?

If you are targeting top MBA programmes, GMAT is traditionally preferred and signals business focus to admissions committees. For STEM Master's or dual-degree programmes, GRE is more commonly used. Many top business schools now accept both equally — always check the specific programme's stated preference before deciding.

✦ Scoring

Understanding GMAT Score Ranges

The GMAT Focus Edition uses a new 205–805 total score scale (in 10-point increments). Each section is scored 60–90. The total score is derived from all three sections combined.

🎯 Indian Students — Typical Requirements

For ISB Hyderabad, the average GMAT score is around 710–720. IIM Ahmedabad's PGP programme typically sees applicants with 700+. For top global MBA programmes (Harvard, Wharton, LBS), aim for 720–760+. A strong Data Insights score is increasingly weighted by admissions committees as it reflects real-world business analytical skills.

✦ Preparation

Expert Prep Tips

Scoring 700+ on the GMAT Focus Edition requires 3–4 months of structured preparation. Here are the key strategies recommended by our GMAT coaches.

01
Start With GMAC's Official Practice
Take the free official GMAT Focus Edition practice exam on mba.com before doing anything else. Your baseline section scores tell you exactly where to focus. GMAC's official materials use real retired questions — no third-party tool replicates them accurately.
02
Master Data Insights Early
Data Insights is the newest section and the one most Indian students underestimate. It requires both quantitative reasoning and data interpretation skills. Study all 5 question types — Data Sufficiency, MSR, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation, and Two-Part Analysis — systematically.
03
Quant: No Calculator — Practice Mental Math
The Quantitative Reasoning section has no on-screen calculator. Build your mental arithmetic speed for multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios. Use the Manhattan Prep GMAT Quant guide and drill problems until you can solve them faster than the 2-minute-per-question target.
04
Verbal: Focus on Critical Reasoning
Sentence Correction was removed in the Focus Edition — Critical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension now dominate. For CR, learn to identify assumption, strengthen, weaken, inference, and bold-face question types. The Official GMAT Verbal Review is your primary resource.
05
Use Your Section Order Strategically
You can choose which section to tackle first. Most high scorers recommend starting with your strongest section to build confidence and momentum, then saving your weakest for last when you are still mentally fresh from the break. Experiment during mock tests to find your ideal order.
06
Simulate Full Tests Every Two Weeks
Take a full-length timed GMAT Focus Edition mock test every two weeks under real exam conditions — including the optional break. After each test, conduct a detailed error analysis by question type and difficulty level. Target your most frequent error category in the following study block.
