✦ Overview

What is NEET 2026?

NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is India's single national-level entrance examination for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH (BAMS, BHMS, BUMS), and Veterinary undergraduate programmes across all government and private medical colleges.

Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), NEET-UG is held once a year as a pen-and-paper, OMR-based test. It replaced all state and institutional-level medical entrance exams, making it the mandatory gateway for medical admission in India โ€” including AIIMS, JIPMER, and all deemed universities.

With over 24 lakh registered candidates competing annually for approximately 1.08 lakh MBBS seats across 706+ medical colleges, NEET is among the most competitive examinations in the world. A high score is essential not only for admission to government colleges but also to avail of scholarship opportunities and NRI/management quota seats.

The exam tests candidates on Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany + Zoology) at the Class 11 and 12 level. Students must have scored at least 50% aggregate in PCB at 10+2 (40% for reserved categories) to be eligible. There is no upper limit on the number of attempts.

Pen & Paper (OMR) Once a Year 700+ Colleges All India Rank
NEET-UG (Undergraduate)

For admission to MD/MS/PG Diploma programmes after MBBS. Conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). Separate from NEET-UG โ€” held earlier in the year for MD/MS seats.
PG Medical Admission
💡 Is NEET mandatory for all medical admissions?

Yes โ€” as of 2020, NEET is the sole entrance exam for all undergraduate medical admissions in India, including AIIMS New Delhi and JIPMER Puducherry, which previously held their own exams. No state-level or institutional medical entrance test is permitted.

✦ Scoring

Understanding Score Ranges

NEET scores range from โ€“200 to 720. Your rank and category determine which college and course you qualify for. Here's what different score brackets typically mean for your admission prospects.

Score RangeLikely RankAdmission ProspectsExample Colleges

🎯 2025 NEET Cut-Off Reference (General Category)

In NEET 2025, the general category qualifying percentile was the 50th percentile, corresponding to approximately 164 marks. However, to secure a government MBBS seat, candidates typically needed 500+ marks. OBC/SC/ST cut-offs are lower โ€” always verify the latest NTA notifications.

✦ Preparation

Expert Prep Tips

Cracking NEET requires a disciplined, NCERT-first approach combined with consistent mock testing. Here are the top strategies from our NEET faculty with 10+ years of experience.

01
Master NCERT Before Anything Else
80โ€“85% of NEET questions are directly from NCERT Class 11 and 12 textbooks โ€” especially in Biology. Read every line, every diagram, and every example. NCERT mastery is non-negotiable before moving to reference books like DC Pandey or Pradeep.
02
Attempt Full-Length Mock Tests Weekly
Simulate real exam conditions โ€” 200 questions in 3 hours 20 minutes, OMR sheet practice included. Analyse your mock performance section-by-section. Weak areas must get 2ร— more revision time. Target at least 20 full mocks before exam day.
03
Prioritise Biology โ€” It Carries 360 Marks
Botany + Zoology together account for 50% of total marks (360 out of 720). A Biology score of 340+ can compensate for moderate Physics and Chemistry performance. Focus heavily on Human Physiology, Genetics, and Ecology in Zoology.
04
Solve Previous Year Papers (2010โ€“2025)
NEET PYQs are the single most valuable resource. Many concepts and even exact questions repeat across years. Solve at least the last 10 years' papers and identify recurring topics โ€” these carry very high probability of reappearing.
05
Manage Negative Marking Strategically
Each wrong answer costs 1 mark. Never guess randomly โ€” if you can eliminate 2 options, it may be worth attempting. If completely unsure, skip the question. Students who manage negative marking well often rank 5,000โ€“10,000 places higher than those who don't.
06
Revise with Short Notes & Flashcards
Create concise one-page notes for each chapter covering formulas, diagrams, and key facts. Use flashcards for Biology definitions and chemical reactions. Revise these notes every 10 days. The final 2 months before NEET should be revision-only โ€” no new topics.
