✦ Overview

What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world's most popular high-stakes English language test, trusted by over 11,500 organisations in 140+ countries.

Jointly managed by the British Council, IDP Education, and Cambridge Assessment English, IELTS measures your ability to communicate in English across all four key language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

For Indian students aiming to study or migrate abroad — particularly to the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or Ireland — a strong IELTS score is an essential first step. Most top universities require a minimum band of 6.5, while competitive programmes may demand 7.0 or above.

With over 3 million tests taken each year, IELTS is available in both paper-based and computer-delivered formats at test centres across India, including major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune.

✦ Preparation

Expert Prep Tips

Achieving your target band score requires focused strategy. Here are the key approaches recommended by our IELTS coaches.

01
Know the Format Cold
Before you practise any English, master the exact structure of each section — question types, timings, and instructions. Half the battle is eliminating surprises on test day.
02
Practise with Official Materials
Use only Cambridge IELTS Official Practice Tests (Books 1–18). These are the gold standard — every other book introduces unrepresentative question styles that can mislead your preparation.
03
Build Academic Vocabulary
Learn 500–800 high-frequency academic words from the Academic Word List (AWL). For Writing Task 2, mastering formal connectors and hedging language is critical for Band 7+.
04
Time Management is Non-Negotiable
In Reading, spend no more than 20 minutes per passage. In Writing, spend 20 min on Task 1 and 40 min on Task 2. Always guess — there is no negative marking.
05
Speaking: Think Aloud & Extend
The examiner wants to hear you speak, not just answer. Always extend with reasons, examples, and contrasting views. Record yourself to catch grammar errors and filler words.
06
Attempt a Full Mock Test Weekly
At least once a week, simulate full test conditions — timed, no interruptions, no dictionary. Analyse your errors by category and target your weakest question type each week.
