IELTS
2026
The world's most trusted English language test — your gateway to top universities in the UK, Australia, Canada, and beyond. Everything you need to know, in one place.
What is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world's most popular high-stakes English language test, trusted by over 11,500 organisations in 140+ countries.
Jointly managed by the British Council, IDP Education, and Cambridge Assessment English, IELTS measures your ability to communicate in English across all four key language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
For Indian students aiming to study or migrate abroad — particularly to the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or Ireland — a strong IELTS score is an essential first step. Most top universities require a minimum band of 6.5, while competitive programmes may demand 7.0 or above.
With over 3 million tests taken each year, IELTS is available in both paper-based and computer-delivered formats at test centres across India, including major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune.
If your goal is university admission, always choose IELTS Academic. For skilled worker visa, PR, or vocational training, choose IELTS General Training. Always verify your target institution's requirement directly.
The 4 Test Sections
IELTS consists of four components, each testing a distinct language skill, all completed in a single sitting except Speaking.
Approximately 2 hours 45 minutes — Listening (30 min + 10 min transfer time), Reading (60 min), Writing (60 min), Speaking (11–14 min, may be on a separate day).
Understanding Band Scores
IELTS uses a 9-band scale to clearly identify English proficiency levels. Your overall band score is the average of all four sections.
| Band | Level | Description | Typical Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9.0 | Expert User | Full operational command — fluent, accurate, and fully understood | Oxbridge, top US law schools |
| 8.0–8.5 | Very Good User | Fully operational command with occasional inaccuracies in unfamiliar contexts | LSE, Imperial, top Australian unis |
| 7.0–7.5 | Good User | Operational command; handles complex language well with occasional errors | Most top UK / Canadian universities |
| 6.0–6.5 | Competent User | Effective command despite some inaccuracies; generally understands complex language | Most undergraduate programmes worldwide |
| 5.0–5.5 | Modest User | Partial command; copes with overall meaning in most situations | Foundation / pathway programmes |
| 1–4.5 | Limited / Non User | Basic or no real proficiency beyond very familiar situations | Pre-sessional English or not accepted |
For most UK and Australian universities, the minimum overall band score is 6.5 with no individual band below 6.0. For competitive programmes like Medicine, Law, or Education, the requirement is often 7.0–7.5.
